44-MILE ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP,

PACE WON BY NON-MEMBER

Contending with a strong side wind from the starting point to Manaia and from there on to Opunake tiattling against a heart-breaking head wind, competitors in the Kaponga Cycle 'Club’s 44-mile championship road race on Saturday last were unanimous in the verdict that it proved a gruelling 'contest over the first half of the journey. Once turned for koine at' the' junction of Eltham-Opunake and the South Roads, however, the riders were favoured with a welcome following wind, but too much had been taken out of them to prevent of record time for the distance.

Belk and Coleman overtook and passed the limit men at Pikama, riding ip. company to the home turn, .where the former took the lead and was never ■caught. He crossed the line seven minutes ahead of Gargan, whom he also beat for fastest time by Smin. 20sec. .Not being a member of the club, Belk forfeited claim to the championship sash, which was awarded to Gargan. Hosie (12min), retired at Pihama. Officials controlling the event were Messrs A. Melville (starter and timekeeper), W. J. Noonan and W. Carrington (judges). Saturday’s fixture concluded the series of nine road races inaugurated by the club, the points scored throughout. the series being: L. S. Gargan 26 points, R". Hosie 25, G. Williams 23, D. Coleman 19, N. Adlam 14, J. Hosie 8, O. Belk 5, K. Mehrtens 4, E. ,Stockman 4. The three first-named are winners of silver cups offered by the club. Enrther racing is suspended Until after the Christmas holidays.
