Breeders in the South Island state that prices for horses have never been as high as at present, said Mr R. McCay, of Hawera, secretary of the Clydesdale Horse Society, in conversation with a “Hawera Star” reporter to-day. Mr McCay returned on Saturday from a tour of four weeks through the South Island. As an illustration of prices being obtained, he mentioned that at a clearing sale at Brookside, Canterbury, 18 working horses averaged the‘sum of £44 each, weighty geldings bringing up to £75. He also found a keen demand existed at high figures for stud hook mares and fillies. Resulting from a motor _ collision in which two vehicles were involved at the junction of Regent Street, Hawera, with the Main South Road at about 10.30 o’clock yesterday morning, a wheel of a car driven by Mr T. W. Eaves, of Otakeho, collapsed. Other damage was occasioned, hut no serious personal iniury was suffered.’ The second car in the mishan was being driven by Mr F. Quin, of Hawera. The latter was travelling on Regent Street, and was turning to the right on to the main road, while Mr Eaves was nroceeding on the main road in the direction of Patea.
