Half-a-million troops have noiy been looked- in' ai deadly striigg.le fbr more than a month in central China. The tissue' still remains in doubt. Eeng Yu-hisiang’s' armies, known as the Kuominchun or “people’s army,” have been adroitly penned tip by Ghfang Kaishek in the famine-stricken provinces of the north-west and must either fight or starve. Chiang Kai-shek is being compelled to strain every nerve to prevent the Nanking regime from collapsing. Foreign observers report that in order to conserve ammunition, the Kuominchun are making fierce night atusing only' swords and bayonets, charging with magnificent bravery. right into the teeth of merciless machine-gun fire. The Kuominchun progressed southwards, seizing Paochang, Chwshan, Fanghsien and Fangcheng, thereby'imperilling the Government’s hold on Siangyang, where there is an arsenal. Meanwhile there is severe fighting in Honan, where a bitter contest is raging? "
