EGMONT SPRING SHOW

THIS W EEK'S ATTRACTION. INCREASE OF ENTRIES. Entries showing an increase over all sections of 21 as compared with last year have been received for the coming show of the Egmont A. and P. Association, being held at Hawera on; Wednesday and Thursday of this week. “The figures for this year are exclusive of post entries, which, in certain stock classes, may be expected to considerably augment' the total,” said the secretary (Mr. M. C. Crighton), in conversation with a “Hawera Star” reporter this morning. The principal increases were in .the stock sections, which held particular appeal to the public. A total of 373 cattle had been entered, as against 248 last year ; horses, with post entries to come, numbered 391 this year as compared with 395 at the last show, and the respective totals in the sheep classes were 111 and 98. The total of entries in all sections ■ was 1771 compared with 1750 in 1928. Particular interest would be attached to the Jersey section on account of the big number of imported animals to be shown. The dairy cow class open to any breed, and in which Henry A. Lane Co.’s tea service, valued at 25 guineas, would be awarded, had drawn a field of 22, including some of the besb-known exhibits on the West coast.

Among the many attractions on Thursday (people’s day) would be a steer riding contest and the buck jumping challenge match between L. Goodger junior, of Hawera, and W. Payne, of Stratford. Both were well known as expert roughriders with successes in various show rings. The hunting competitions were well filled, the championship having attracted a list of 17 contenders, while 19 horses had been nominated for the open hunters’ class. The pony- classes, which were always a strong feature, were again well supported. Side show hooking was heavy, and the class of entertainment should show a marked improvement on previous years, continued Mi’. Orighton. Trade exhibits of the class lidding particular interest to those engaged in agricultural pursuits would be much, bigger than usual, while the motor exhibits would also be increased and make an imposing display. The catering for the show would again be in til© hands of the ladies’ committee, under the direction of Mrs. W- Adams, and should meet with general appreciation.
