FIRE FANCIES.
Deep in the glowing coals the goblins Play, Two tiny men Leap on a glowing spark, and sail away Beyond my ken! Still there are others left. Beneath a tree 'Sits a wee elf, Weaving with threads of fire a dream for me, All by himself!
In the red-hearted fire the goblins dance In a close ring; Peering I watch them leap, and just by chance 'Glimpse their small King; There by a throne of gold and saffron flame He takes his stand, Bidding the gods of fire to bless, not blame, His Impish band!
From the hot rosy coals the goblins peer At me, as tho’ They wonder greatly why I lean so near And watch them so; They are so joyous as they dance in there! This laugliing one Binds a soft ribbon in his sweetheart’s hair, Gold as tho sun!
Anri this one plucks fire blossoms blue as wee Forget-me-nots; And sews them on each satin-ruffled knee In lovers ’ knots. While here, two happy babies laugh and roll Beneath a tall Green tongue of flame, and take a rounded coal To play at ball!
The fire falls in tho grate —an amber heap— And for a joke The wind elf in the sooty chirnnev steep Puffs acid smoke . . • And all the merry goblins flee away In great afright; But I shall glimpse again their merry play _ l To-morrow night!
