TARANAKI STOCK MARKETS.

THE WEEK’S SALES. NEWTON KING’S REPORT. Reviewing the live stock market in Taranaki during the past week, Newton King, Ltd., state: Beef. —Supplies of first quality cat-1 tie are by no means plentiful, necessitating butchers’ requirements of any consequence having to be filled from outside, but, of course, the smaller requirements are being filled locally. Cow beef is much in the minority, and for the most part requirements are being filled from supplies of bullocks. There are a few odd lots of second quality cattle coming forward to the various fortnightly sales, and during the week the prices for this class have had a tendency to ease a little, but not to any noticeable extent. Quotations range as follow: Heavy prime fat bullocks ,-£ls to £l6 10s, lighter prime fat bullocks £l4, 'heavy prime fat cows £l3 10is, lighter sorts £l2. The prices ruling at our various sales range as follow: Heavy prime fat cows up to £l2, second quality and unfinished cattle £8 10s to £9 10s. Fat Sheep.—Quotations under this heading are much "more plentiful than those offering for beef, the majority being for shorn sheep, and no difficulty is being experienced in fulfilling butchers’ requirements. Prices throughout remain on a par with those that were mentioned in our last- report. Butchers are operating freelv on fat lambs, and the prices for these range from -24 s to 265.

Store Sheep.—The majority of quotations under this heading are for 4 and 6-year-old ewes lor sale on a forward delivery basis and as the demand is not as strong as it was at this period last year, only fair numbers of sales have as yet been effected- Generally speaking, prices expected by vendors for 4 and 5-year-old ewes range from 24s to 2cs, while straight lines of four-year-olds are being quoted at from 26s to 275, but of the sales of these two classes that have been effected the prices have been 22s to 23s for the first-mentioned, while those for the latter have ranged from 24s to 24s 6d. There is a. good inquiry lor hoggets, especially ewes, but as yet only limited quotations are to hand, resulting in few sales being effected. Of the quotations received, prices tor the best lines ranged from 33s to 345. Wether hoggets off the shears are also being quoted at from 22s to 22s 6d, but as >et. few sales of this class, through the medium of private treaty, have ceen effected. However, a gooct entry came forward to the Aria sale on Thursday, and l met with a ready sale under spirited competition, the prices obtained ranging from 22s 9d to 23s 3d. Quotations for wether lambs off I the shears range from 18s to 18s fc'd, j while mixed .sex lambs in the wool are | being quoted at from 22s to 22s 6d, but in view of the uncertainty of the market, no sales of this class have as yet been recorded in this district. Store Cattle.—A strong demand ,is still in evidence for all classes in this section, with perhaps insufficient offering to fulfill requirements, this applying more especially to good quality ■ young store cows, as is exemplified by the spirited competition that is in evidence lor any of this class when put under the hammer. Male cattle are conspicuous by their absence in the open country. However, fair numbers came forward to our back country sales held during the week, and met with a ready sale under spirited competition. A good demand is still in evidence for yearling Jersey heifers, and although there are few top quality cattle now offering, the medium classes are, in most cases, meeting with a ready sale. During the week a line of extra, choice cattle changed hands through the medium of private treaty at £9 per head.

: There is a strong demand for good | quality .hold-over cattle-, but as very lew good cattle are' offering, difficulty l is being experienced in fulfilling reI quirements, and where any cattle of I good class are submitted to public f auction spirited competition is in eviI deuce, and! pleasing prices mie the outlier of the day. At .the Awakino, Oh.au and Aria sales, held during the ‘week, splendid entries of all classes in this section came forward, and good l benches of buyers were in attendance, which resulted in a full clearance being effected in each case at prices pleasing to vendors. Thp following is a range of [ the 'prices obtained! for the various Classes: —Good coloured 3 and 4-year-old bullocks, £9 10s to- £lO, black and white and mixed coloured sorts £8 14s to £8 15s, Jersey bullocks £7 7s to £7 10s, 2-year-old steers £7 to £7 11s, 2-year-old Polled Angus steers £7 19s, best yearling Polled Angus steers ' up to £6 10s. others £5 8s to £5 10s, for-farcl-conditioned cows £8 2s 6d to £8 12s 6d. good-framed and good-coloured young store cows £7 is. £7 12s 6d. £7 13s, others' £5 8s to £6 10s. Odder and lower-conditioned sorts realised from £3 10s to £4 ss. Mixed coloured 2.V to 3-year-old empty heifers in good store condition made up to £8; good 2-year-old empty Shorthorn heifers, up to £8 3s. others £6 2s 6d to £7, best cows with calves at foot, tip to £8 2s 6d; mixed coloured sorts, £5 15s to £6, yearling to 18 months Polled- Angus heifers £6 IQs-, good quality yearling Jersey heifers £7 17s, mixed! coloured sorts £4 to £4'l6s Gel. Dairy Cattle.—With the season now

.we 1;1 advanced, the offerings at our various centres have naturally fatten off considerably. However, there is a rood demand still in evidence for cattle of good quality, and where' good cattle, close to profit or in full milk, are submitted by auction, keen competition is in evidence, resulting in good prices being obtained. For the most part the small ~-nrding.s that are being submitted are of poor quality, and are more or less dull of sale. Rigs.—Good vafiinigs of weaners are coming, forward to the various centres, while few good store pigs are being in eluded in the offerings, ami as there is a. keen demand! for the lattw class, with insufficient offerings to fulfil refuiremonts. good quality and well done wonners are meeting with a. ready safe ruder spirited competition. The prices ruling are on a par with those mentioned in our last report-.
