STRANDED STEAMER
ON FIRE FOR 20 DAYS.
CREW TAKES TO THE BOATS. ASSISTING SHIP ALSO ASHORE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyilgnt.) —United Service). Received 10.5 a.m. to-dav. COLOMBO, Oct-. 14. The German cargo liner Hoclist exploded off Minieoy Island, where she was stranded on a reef. For 20 days lire raged on the vessel, and the crew of 28 took to the lifeboats after sending a radio SOS. The liner Mathura rushed to the rescue, and -saved all the crew, but there is no news of the captain.
The German liner Laurerfels, which went to the help of the Hoehst, is now on the reef, and three attempts to tow her off have failed. The Lauterfels had one woman passenger. She donned a boiler suit, was lowered by -ropes to a lifeboat, and was taken on board a passing liner. The Hoehst wireless was sent only just in time, the _ second explo-sion blowing the transmitter to pieces.
