NEW BOOKS. Lowell Thomas, the author of “With Lawrence in Arabia,’’ lias written a new book called “Beyond Khvber Pass.” This is of particular interest as Afghanistan is, since 'the collapse of the old Turkish Empire, the most powerful Mohammedan state. A copy has been placed in the Haiwera Public Library. Another new volume is “Man Killers and Marauders” by W. S. Chadwick (just pubilshed by Witheby). This interesting volume covers some of the big game encounters of an African hunter. Hergeshciwer’s “Swords and Poses” is a record of the days of the civil war in America, and is well worthv of close attention.

Other new books are: “'BrethcrtonKhaki or Field-Grey” (W. F. Morris); “The Widow Leronge” (Gaborian); “The Masked Eider” (H. Birney); “Rodeo” (B. M. Bowen); “White Witches” (M.
