This week will be a quiet one in the racing world of our Dominion. The spring meeting of the Masterton Racing Club on Saturday next will be the onlv fixture. * * *■ » *

Despite the fact that many “dud” horses have been sold to Australians, the successes of our houses at this year’s (spring gatherings in Australia will strengthen the opinion of m-ost leading judges in Australia that New Zealand-bred thoroughbreds are superior to those bred in any other part of Australasia. * * * » *

The two-year-old Simba is a great galloper, and it would appear that he would be worth some thousands oi pounds to an Australian owner, but seeing wluit rank failures his halfbrothers, Runnymede and Raasav, have proved .since crossing the Tasman, one would hesitate before recommending Simba to any prospective buyer from Australia- On the law of averages Simba should do well in Australia. *****

There are many others, but off hand those mentioned are eases where Australian form led us t-o expect great deeds, only to be disappointed.

In past years veteran trainer JR. J. Mason took his team of horses to Australia, about J uly. These horses were generally raced at the less important meetings of New (South Wales, and fiy the time the big meeting of the A.J.G. was due sucii performers were at their best. P. Mason, sou of R. J. Mason, only went to Australia a few days prior to the opening day of the A.J.C., and as Honor and Jaleux both raced well it seems a. pity they did not go sooner- * * * * •

After a long absence from race riding jockeys rarely show their best form on returning to active race, riding. An exception to this rule is II Goldlinch, wlio is now riding better than ever.

P. Mason did not wait for the concluding day of the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting. Leaving Sydney last Friday with Honour and Jaleux, lie was .due m Wellington to-day. Although Mason failed to win a race witli his team, their performances prove them well forward, and it is any odds on both Honour and Jaleux winning more than one event at immediate meetings. *****

Last season Red Heckle was a. good three-year-old, and some considered him the equal of Nightmarcli. During the winter months Nightmarcli lias certainly made age improvement, and is possibly a better gelding for a four-year-old than was the case last season. On his only public outing of the current season Red Heckle showed form that tsuggests age improvement and his presence from now on will infuse interest into races. *****

In 11is early racing Clarendon was considered very promising. So good was his private work that Clarendon was sent to race in Australia, hut he did not show any form across the Tasman. • This season Clarendon wears a nice appearance and in his initial attempt at Hastings recently lie raced in a manner that brought him under notice for life engagement at the Napier Park meeting. Clarendon was well supported by liis connections for his last engagement, and while he was not particularly fortunate in the running Clarendon won easily. He is engaged at the Masterton and Wellington meetings, and lie is one worth noting as a Jikelv candidate.
