A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Owen Eugene O’Neill and Michael O’Neill, of Alanutahi, was called by flic D.O.A. (Mr R. 8. Sage) to take place ait Hawera to-day, hut lapsed owing to the kick of a quorum. Bankrupts had been engaged in contracting and labouring work ais O’Neill Bros. Both were in attendance, witli Air P. O’Dca as legal adviser. Air S. R. A 7 cit eh represented three of 'the creditors. The financial statement showed debts totalling £212 18s Id, against which there wore no assets. The list of unsecured creditors' was as follow: F. R. Palmer, Alanutahi, £lB 10s; Dr Sinclair, Hawera,- £2 14s; Patea Butchery, £lB lfis fid; “Daily News,’’ New Plymouth, £9 .13s; Gold-stone & Patterson, Hawera, £5 3s 4-d; A claims Ltd., Patea, £7 4s Gd; C. J. Hawk on, Alokoin, £5 11s; George Wrnlsli, Alokoin. £2 lGs; A. T. Alain, Alokoia, £2 IGs; 11. Rodger, Hawera, £8; Dr. Simmons, Patea, IQs Gd; J. Iverrisk, Oliangai, £10; W. A. Parkinson & Co., Ltd., Hawera, £2O; Halliwell & Co., Hawera, £2 2s; O’Dea & Bay Icy, Hawera, £l4 Is; Hawera Hospital Board, £GO; A. B. Atuggcridgc, Alanutahi, £25. The written statement submitted by ■bankrupts stated that Owen had suffered a. fractured leg which prevented him from working for 15 months. Ho also lost the first finger of his right hand. “Work has not been too plentiful,’’ concluded the statement. “Our creditors had issued summonses and judgment summonses, and we had no alternative but to file.”
Replying to the D.0.A., bankrupts stated that the amount owing to A. B. Muggeridge was the balance of a debt ior “about £7O or £80.” dating bac-k for about 35 years.
Owen O’Neill stated he had been unable to pay anything off the hospital board’s debt in respect of treatment for a, fractured thigh, though he had paid a previous account tor treatment of an injured hand.
“We hope to be able to pav all the debt eventually, but it will take some time,” said Michael O’Neill. Afr Witch considered that a IS bankrupts were single men they should qacli undertake a guarantee, of say £25, which would return approximately 5s in the pound to the creditors. Present wages did not exceed £3 a week each and they had to provide for an invalid sister, said Aliehael O’Neill. They were willing t 0 do anything possible. but could not promise a definite amount. The meeting was adjourned sine die.
