j An attempt was made to set fire to the Bangfriri Hotel about 7.30 o’clock on Thursday evening, says a Press Association message from Auckland. A sack saturated with kerosene was placed on the verandah at the front door of the public bar and was set alight. It was blazing fiercely when it was discovered by the porter. The flooring of the verandah was already alight when the fire was discovered, but it was easily extinguished. The sack was soaked with kerosene at one part of the verandah and carried to the bar door. The proprietor, Mr. Bert Clarke, reported the offence to the police.
