THE ELTHAM ARREST.

UtIARGE of breaking and ENTERING. OTHER SIMILAR CHARGES HEARD. (,Dy Telegraph—Speulal to the Star.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 30. A youth named John Mull ally, who wqas arrested at Eltham yesterday by Detective Meiklejohn, was charged today before Mr J. R. Hill, J.P., with breaking and entering the shop of C. W. McDonald, jeweller, Devon Street, and stealing goods to the value of £32 17s 6d. Mullally was represented by Mr J. H. Sheat.

Detective Meiklejohn asked for a remand until to-morrow morning, when lie said the. police would have no objection to granting bail. The remand' was granted. The robbery was discovered, on the morning of June. 21, when Mr MacDonald found the front door of his .shop open. Indications pointed to a duplicate key having been used, as the door was not damaged. It was found that a varied selection of goods had been removed, including rings, clocks and fountain pens. William Claude White and Joseph , Abraham Cleaver also appeared to- ( adv on remand in connection with the j £304 robbery from O. C. Wards, Ltd. ■ Mr G. Macallan appeared for both accused.

On the application of Detective Meiklejohn, White was again remanded until to-morrow morning. The detective stated that there would then he no objection to bail being granted. On the application of the detective, Cleaver was reamnded until September 6.

Mr Macallan applied for bail on behalf of Cleaver, and this was granted on his own recognisance of £25 and one surety of £2OO. A lot of interest was shown in the cases, a large crowd being present at the courthouse.

SEAGER SENTENCED. TWO YEARS FOR HAWERA BURGLARIES. (By TelesrrapJj—Press Asfwy'-.ation.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 30. This morning at the Supreme Court. Reginald Eugene Seager, who pleaded guilty to four charges of breaking, entering and theft at business places in Hawern. and stealing goods and money to the value, of £2O, was sentenced to two years on each charge, the sentences to he concurrent. The Chief Justice said that such cases were rife, not only in this district. hut all over the country. The courts must do their best to out them clown.
