ther in the second round of the Australian amateur championship, Morpeth scoring a brilliant win. Whitt-on was two up on the morning’s play, increasing the lead to live in the afternoon. Morepth responded magnificently, at the 35tli being one up. At the next he missed a short putt for a win. The pair went to the third round. Excitement was intense until the 42nd hole was halved. Here Morpeth put his second on the green, while Whitton was in a bunker on the right, the latter needing two putts and Morpeth holing in par four. Tt was a spectacular hole. The 39th was the Bottle Neck, with the green between two craters, the length being 280 yards. From the tee Morpeth played an iron and got
beauty. Wbitton pulled a trifle, staying .short on the sand. Thence ho adroitly got on the green in two putts. Morpeth bad here a- chance to win. His chip was too long, and ho tipped the ball a foot from the pin, getting a half. He had a great reception.
