That some fires are caused in remarkable ways is shown by the nature of some of the outbreaks which received attention of the Dunedin City Eire Brigade in the past year. In tho scheduled list of the causes of fire four outbreaks were attributed! to children p'iaying with matches. Two •small outbreaks occurred through camejciss people placing lighted cigarettes in their pockets, while persons dropping lighted matches were responsible for two fires. One outbreak was attributable to rats eating matches, 12 were caused by sparks from cooking ranges and furnaces, and another was caused by wooden boxes being placed on hot water pipes becoming ignited. A total of 41 outbreaks appeared under the heading of "cause unknown. ’’ Backfiring in motor-cars resulted in the brigade turning out on nine occasions, and defective chimneys and fireplaces accounted for 10 minor outbreaks. On one occasion the brigade had to deal with a gas oven fire, in :a house where the occupants had apparently neglected to pay attention to a niece of meat that was being roasted. Failing to switch off the current after using electric irons accounted for four outbreaks, and fused electric light wires caused four fires.
