'' averiev. at Waverley. Sept. .14 —Ladies v. Men s return match. . . r , Sept. IS and 21- I’residcnt v. Captain match (tentative). WEEKLY COM PETITION. Some two dozen me inner s took part in the weekly bogey comeptition on Saturday, d'lie afternoon, though hue, was hardlv ideal, as a cold southerly made matters rather unpleasant until plavers were well under way. Judging hv' the cards returned most competitors anpear to have met with trouble, and the results were not quite what mi"lit have been expected. Whitehead, who has been playing fairly steadv golf of late, handed in the winning card. 3 down, closely followed bv Wills and Syme, 4 down. Wills could have been better, hut lie seemed to take a great, fancy for 5. getting that figure at no less' than 13 out of the 18” holes, while Syme appears to have been off his game going out, hut made up for it coming home by winning 4 "holes from bogey, with 3 halved. hysons. by playing many holes well, though in places he came to grief, finished up o down, and it is good lo see ilicsc* newer players .beginning to show up in a competition. Several other lower handicap men failed, including Little, who. with o holes to go. looked as if he was in a winning position, nnlv to then Jose the last 5 and eventually coining in 0 down. ELTHAM MATCH.
This returji match took place over the week-end, hut unfortunately both clubs could not get their full strength. On account of much sickness and farm duties Eft ham could only muster .14 players, so instead of the match; being played as arranged- early in the season, it was decided- on the Fairfield course. The sides consisted ol 14, and four-hall matches were played all day. To make the game as interesting as possible the local team was picked to pair off as evenly as possible with tho available Elthani members, in this respect matters could not have turned out better, for over the day’s play there was nothing between the sides. In the morning Eltluun had the advantage bv 4 to 2. with 1 all square, but Rawer a turned the tables after lunch, and with 6 games in the position was all .square. .By this time a fair amount of excitement was evident, and all were patiently waiting for the deciding game, and when it came in all square these four players were greeted with cheers for upholding their .respective sides so manfully- both- motiiijn<r and afternoon.. Little and Cox. plavino- ton. not a good heating from Stewart and '"Casey in the- morning, hut after lunch it was a different matter. Little got on to his game, and, ably assisted by Cox. won as bandsomelv as they lost in the morning. Abbott and" Phillips proved too strong in both games—though- it was a verv close matter in the afternoon — for Hav-Mackenzie and Elliott. Likewise 11. Wills and Fallows had the best of the argument against- IL AN ills and Vinnieombc. Ritchie and Gibson, after suffering defeat in the morning, turned Jibe tables on Gibson and Clemo-w utter lunch. Wilson and Pease, playing Free and Campbell, had no- trouble in adding two wins to the Hatvera team. Pease was doing some good work with his driver, getting many tee shots over the 200 vard-s marks. ATevri-ck and Robb. senr.. against Hill iuul Chrysta'l. helped the TTawera Club bv notching a couple of wins. The last pair. Speedy and Andersonbad; two hard and interesting struggles with Carter and Tiplady. and over the 3f> levies neither pair could get a decision. both rounds finishing up ail square. The day. though a cold wind made its presence felt, was sunny and all participating appeared to have a most enjoyable time.
AIAN.VIA. MATCH Undoubtedly the Wednesday members have had matters against them of iate. La-s-t Wednesday they were sc lied-, uli-J to- meet Alanaia at Mawera, but again rain caused the match to be postponed. These players are most unlortunato, fur tliev only get one day a week for play and -recently the elements have done them out of tneir golf on at least three occasions. It is to he hoped that matters improve from now on, so that these mid-week members can get- a little golf in on their bokdav.
CHAMPIONSHIPS. Dm ini' the week inudi progress has. been made wit!) tiic champioiiHitp matches. In the senior grade tJie iinst round U oomph'ted'. Quin pot what ol n surprise when playing Mel--0(1 v—trie latter is -really better than a* 20” handicaip player --and had to go t l ' the !•"> preen Indore he could Haim the match. Walk ley. playing Blair. when all square at the third, continued, one of his hursts and hy playing par go I I won 11 to next live holes and eventual I v won the match (i ——3. \\ alkley lias improved considerably this season, his tee shots, when he does not overawing, are a line effort and. as-his irons and green shots are on the up-grade, he. is heromi no- a dangerous man. to meet m matcU pi ay. His match with Little in t-lie second -round should be. interesting lor any lapses by either player ail! most- likely be taken advantage of. After a good even match \V hiteheaa ju-st came out ahead of Welts, it- is pleasing to see ailll the senior arst round matches completed ami the results of the tsecond round are keenly looked forward to. Cox, continuing higood ei ; - ( fort of the previous week on Saturday,, bv playing .steady golf coupled 'with a. few wood putts and two stymies, gave 1 Wiggins more than one .1 right, and the! latter had to go all out to get the game on the I 7ih green 2 and 1. Among tile juniors not quite as good progress has been, made, but a* there i:s only one game out of the first round not played the position is quite satisfactory.' So far this season it lias been left to the j tin ions to stage the closest on.nte.sL in” the championship. The Ha-ins worth.-Saga r match was fought 1 out hole by hole and it was not until the *22 green had been visited that Hainsworth could he proclaimed winner on the day. Champion also had to be on his game in the match against Stinrrock. as tlx 1 whole eighteen had to he played before he got the march one up. Pease had a fairly comfortable win against Speedy. (L K. Strange — “.Dormic” miiier.slaiid.s- a-fter being 4 down, at tbe turn— .proved too strong for Dalgefclv by 2 and this match again demonstrating that the higher qualifiers may often he beaten by a. player just ling in ' l’ie qua 1 dying icunds.
Three of the best qualifying juniors, Ryan, Jansen, and: Dalgetty, have been, put out in the first round. Pease be- ( ing the only one to hold hi-s ground.i The only pair to. meet and thus complete the junior first round i-s J- C.I Robb- and XV. G. Strange. Interest will now materially increase in the two main championships, and this week shoal'd see seme good contests. In Lite seniors Little meets Walk-ley, Quin meets Sinclair, «hd O'Callaghan meets Whitehead. 0 Callaghan and Sinclair are at present taking part in, the Rotorua tournament, endeavouring perhaps to get into form to win their matches on their return towards the end of the week. While away they may instead become stale and thereby give Quin and Y\ liitelteacl a chance to’win. “Donnie ’ forecasts —-things being equal—that Quin will meet Little and O’Callaghan will meet Wiggins in the semi-final, hut in the game of golf it is not always sale- to forecast the result of matches and. therefore, his opinion may be wide of the mil rli.
In Life juniors Jie can see some good struggles before the semi-final players are known. Looney and Hainswortli should bo an even match, with perhaps a shade of odds in the former s favour. C hampion may prove a little too good for Alev rick, but, as the later member is very keen and a trier, he may upsetcalculations. G. Strange should account for Powdrell. and Pease may account for the winner of the J. C. Robb and W. G. Strange match. As the course lias considerably improved during the last week, given fair weather conditions it should be good for these matches, and tho whole cl'ub will be looking forward with much interest to the "respective- results.
LIMIT DIVISION Wednesday* wet weather rather bail* dieupped the progress iu the limit division, but taking all things into consideration the interest taken by those members concerned in this test of skill, is very marked and the games are going oil very satisfactorily. Since last week Mc-Fariane got hi* game from Turner by default as did Bramwell from Hall. Morgan got the-' decision from ’Blair jump, and Horner proved too strong for his brothel" .solicitor, Chuck. A. G. Walker, a first year player, showed to advantage from his more experienced opponent Veiteli, and Abbott, who can hit a good tee- shot when on the job,! won hi,s match against Tosw.ill, a new arrival in liawera. Jones, who has played a. little iu the past, celebrated bis* .roturn to the course bv comfortably beating a new player. It is pleasing to gee- Williams again taking a more active part in the- game and. be won his match against J. A. Walker, another beginner. Williams is likely to meet Jones in the third round, when a good match should eventuate. One game in the second round has been played when MeFarlane managed to get the best of Bob Mortloek by the narrow margin of 2 and i. “Donnie’’ is very interested in thisseries of matches and is very pleased to see the amount- of interest taken by the many competitors and, from what he notices, the members are getting a lot of enjoyment out of their games-. There are still six matches- to be played before the first round is completed and lie hopes' that they are- played without delay or perhaps a great ileal of interest may to dost. lit- would n-ot like to pick "t-lie winner of “Aiiony-mcii-sV’- trophy, for he can see it- is very open and many surprises; are likely to help -stimulate the interest as the various matches are played off. Among these players are many who should before long be found higher up on the handicap-hoard ami they should not-lose an opportunity ol studying the better players with an occasional visit to our professional. The game ol go’ll to a beginner i a a. mysterious affair, both from a. playing -point of view as well afa how to score and the- understanding ol the numerous golf terms and expressions. '“Donnie's” advice to beginners is to procure a cheap riiile book, from it one can readily get an idea- of many small matters which would always he useful. Beginners should not Ik* afraid to ask better players for advice on any point that should come before them for .they will find a ready reply to their request and thereby perhaps derive still ’further enjoyment in the game. We have all been through tho mill and still the majority of players have something to learn about the play or rules. -So get into it beginners. and obtain all the fun possible—and I might say there- i,s plenty to get, more so than -perhaps -from- any other game. “Donnie” should know, as he has had a go at most. The game is played: everywhere now at all seasons of the year and a golfer can always get a round anywhere lie; may happen to be spending any odd time- by making himself known to the golf-ora of Hie town he should be in.
LADIES’ .MATCH “Doratie" lias been informed that-the Ladies’ Club has issued a challenge lo the men to play a return match. On this occasion they desire it to be a-four-bi-.i! fixture. It is understood the challenge inis been accepted and that September 14 will see the two clubs fighting it 'out lii -n lie end. In the earlier match this season the men won by 13 to S, and the ladies want to wipe this out; so, members, get your game iu order and see if we can withstand their charge.- -
