FEDERAL POLITICS

INTERESTING POSITION. ABOLITION OF ARBITRATION. CLOSE DIVISION EXPECTED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association ) CANBERRA, Aug. 27. The Government’s position on the Arbitration Court Abolition Bill is by no means assured as a result of the defection of Mr W. M. Hughes and Mr Mann, who were suspended from the party as a result of voting against the- Government in a censure motion last week. The latest Government members to announce their intention to vote against the measure are Messrs Maxwell and Stewart, which reduces the Government’s normal majority to four. At least five other Government nominees are regarded as doubtful, and it is not unlikely that the Speaker will be called upon to resolve the situation.

A section of the Press is demanding that Mr Hughes should resign and face the electors.

The Federal political outlook is therefore regarded as full of possibilities.
