WOMEN’S DIVISION

PROGRESS IN J2LTHAM

Much enterprise has been shown in the women’s division of the Farmers Union in South Taranaki, and Elthmn is one of the best centres. At the meeting of the branch last week Mrs. J. Cocker presided over a good number of members. An interesting report of the comer - ence was read bv the delegate, Mrs. Austin, with special reference to Mothers’ Welfare Week An view oi the far-reaching importance of the Mothers’ Welfare campaign. Mothers Welfare Week on the part ol the division will be an annual affair, and ends or begins with Mothers'' Sunday. Mrs. Pitcaithly, book club librarian, has received a donation of books from the Manaia branch. Nurse Ingles conducted a home nursing class. The subject taken was the treatment of sores, boils, etc., and value of fomentations.

MONTHLY MEETING OF OKAIAWA BRANCH.

The business transacted at the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in Okaiawa on Saturday was specially interesting because* of the visit to the district of Mr J. w. .Tones, of North Auckland, a former president in South Taranaki and an enthusiast for the union. Mr E. ,T. Booth presided. . Mr Jones gave an interesting address to members on the subject of tariffs and 1 lie question of their effect on secondarv and primary industries. He dealt also with many other aspects of the question, and at. the conclusion answered several Questions and was accorded a: hearty vote' of thanks foi his address. An apologv was received lor unavoidable absence from Mr S. Blake, of Hawera. At the preliminary business meeting of the branch arrangements were made for the annual concert, the details to lie left to the president and secretary The arranging of the programme was also' left to the two officials in co-operation with Mr G. Betts.
