ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
DEATH AT FOOTBALL MATCH. (By Telegrapti —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 18. . Edwin King, aged 63, collapsed and died while watching the Hawke’s Bay v. Auckland Rugby match at Eden Park this afternoon. He resided ht Manger e. FATAL BLASTING ACCIDENT. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 18. One man was killed and another injured in a- blasting accident at Gobbles Pass yesterday*. The man killed was John Hubber, a -widower, aged 53, employed by the Public Works Department on the road at Gobbles Valley. Hubber was SO yards from the spot where the gelignite was fired, but a large piece of rock was thrown out, which hit Hubber, causing severe internal injuries. He died an hour and a-half after the accident. John. Daly", who was working with Hubber, was also struck by a piece of rook, but was only" bruised.
AUCKLAND STREET ACCIDENTS. AUCKLAND, Aug. 18. Ronald Hugh Brownlee, aged 28, single, who was severely injured in a collision between his motor-cycle and a motor-lorry" in Dominion Road yesterday morning, died in the -hospital In the afternoon. By an extraordinary coincidence, Brownlee’s mother, Mrs Mary" Brownlee, was severely injured when crossing the road at the same spot where her sou received his fatal injury". She stepped off the footpath late in the evening in heavy rain, when she was struck by a car, sustaining injuries to- the head and chest and a broken -leg. Her condition is improving.
LEVEL CROSSING SMASH. WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. A motor-car carrying four passengers collided with a train at the Camp Road level crossing at Trentham at about 8.45 p.m. on Saturday night. The car was badly knocked about, although all the occupants' escaped serious injury. • Harold Sanderson, -of Hing Street, Upper Hutt, the driver, received a scalp wound; Daniel Auld, of 18 Henry Street, Upper Hutt, received wounds on his face and knees; George McKegney, of 20 Benzie Avenue, Upper Hutt, received injuries to liis left hand. All were also suffering from shock, though Eric Butler, the fourth passenger, escaped uninjured. VERDICT OF SUICIDE. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 17. With the top of his head blown off, Alfred King, a middle-aged man, was found dead in a sleeping hut at the rear of R. Mussun’s bakery yesterday. King was formerly in charge of one of Musson’s coffee stalls. He was found lying on the floor of the hut with a shotgun across liis chest. Some weeks ago- another employee was found dead in another of the sleeping huts, a verdict of suicide beng returned. _ At the inquest into, the death of King to-day evidence- was given by Ms fellow- employees that he had been worried and depressed lately owing to his indifferent health.
The coroner, Air E. C. Eewey, S.M., returned a verdict of suicide.
