LEWISHAM HOSPITAL FOR

WELLINGTON, August 19. The first Lewisham Hospital in Wellington was opened yesterday by the Governor-General, Sir Charles 1) ergustsoii. The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, -who was amongst those present-, said that the total cost wais £50,000, Of which £20,000 had been, raised. Later on the Mayor, Mr. Troup, explained that Mr J. McGrath, chairman of the committee, and Sir Joseph Ward had given the guarantee necessary to enable the work to proceed. Over £IOOO was collected on the ground.

The reason oi : the steamer Ivia Ora’s return was the of a leak due to the corrosion of one of the shell plates on the port side in the vicinity of the stokehold. The ship not being deeply loaded, it was above the waterline and the influx of water was easily kept down by pumps. Temporary repairs will be ellected by rivetting an ‘‘overall patch” over the defective plate and the vessel is expected to get away to-morrow. The cargo was in no way affected.

GRANDSTAND UNROOFED. CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. A strong nor-west wind yesterday unrooted the grandstand now in course of erection at Hangiora, for the North Canterbury Jcokey Club. The whole building will have to be rebuilt. TWO SUSPICIOUS FIRES. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 19. Two suspicious fires occurred in the city on Saturday night. In one case the outbreak began in a wasbbou.se, which had not been used during the day, and it spread to tlio kitchen, where the brigade checked it. in the other case a small office attached to J. E. Cooper’s coalyard in Montreal Street was destroyed. An employee living nearby was awakened by the sound of a muffled explosion and ran out, to see the front wall of the structure ablaze.
