The sand track proved of viailue .yesterday morning to trainers wanting to give their horses fast or pace work, the other tracks being, impossible owing to the heavy rains. The centre of the course is being also used extensively for trotting and cantering for horsesi not requiring fast work. Trainers J. Fryer and M. Conway have returned from Trentham and; were out isuperintendiug the work of their teams. Fryer’fs Winter Cup esuulkliate, Paitonu, wa,s allotted a couple of rounds of half pa.ee work. .Me nil ip, who has been doing easy work on the roads, being given isimifar work. M. Conway is giving the big die,stunt Bon Eve (by Campfire —Zion, by. St. Clements—Pomeroy) regular pace work. Pomeroy, the grand dam, will he remembered as the mother of good performers, in Income, Playoff, etc. Oiercir Spear, in the same stable, has been gelded, and is in regular work again.
Bisox and Silvermin© were out doing easy exercise. The former hooks specially well, and <m •appearance no excuses can be made for her failures -so lar this winter. Silent and the Gasbag gelding under G. Edgecombe’s care were galloped three furlongs, finishing on even iterms in 41se:;«. Edgecombe’s maiden shaped wel'l in this iliis first real run along. Bernsju'i’ Partaga and Liatakia were out doing pace work. The trio are looking in good shape and wilt not take long to got into racing shape when required.
J. Stackhouse is keeping Boundary going in view of competing at the Hunt meeting at New Plymouth next month.
Bione and leiogne both d'id useful pace work, the remainder of Fryer’s team being restricted to easy exercise. Mr T. Newman's two-vciir-old and Guard of Honour galloped three furlongs in 401. The yearling fail brother to Just So has been broken in and made his appearance on the tracks yesterday morning. This oolt. promises to grow into a commanding-looking horse, and! it will be surprising if lie does not inherit some of the speed of Kiosk, Mireusonfca, and Go., his. half-brothers. Hawera-tnained houses in Havering and Hopwood scoured stake money to the value of £4BO at the Wellington meeting, the former accounting for £2BO and Hopwood for £2OO. The latter has now won £450 in first moneys for J. •Thacker, and big next win will see him out of hack company. J. .Butler (Stratford) leaves Wellington on Friday for Australia in ■charge of Sea town.
