England batted quietly before lunch. Hammond certainly got six fours, but was unusually restrained. Woolley played a masterful innings, always confident, hitting a hard sixer and ten fours. Hendren failed to survive the initial over. England, after lunch, seemed to adopt more aggressive tactics, but the policy faded, South Africa 1 taking five: wickets for 58. Deane adopted a quick change of bowling, j The South African fielding was high class. The substitute wicket-keeper, Van der Merve, performed excellently and took an abnormal number of leg side balls. He allowed only two byes. Larwood strained his ankle and did not bowl to-day. The South Africans batted cautiously, especially after a bad 1 start. _ Fifty runs came up in eighty minutes. Mitchell and Merkel were especially sedate . Mitchell suddenly woke up and hit Tate to the boundary twice. White put himself on and got Mitchell in the second over. The attendance was 11,500.
