STORAGE OF FRUIT.
SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION SUGGESTED. (By Tttiegrapn—Press Association.i WELLINGTON. July 4. The suggestion that a fruit research committee should be set up to investigate the problems of cool storage for fruit and temperatures at which fruit should be held while in transport, were made by the Hon. H. .\tinore, Minister in charge of scientific industrial research, at the fruitgrowers’ conference to-day. After dealing with the many problems involved, Mr Atmore .spoke of the experiments carried out- at Cawthorn Institute, which shows the possibilities ahead and suggested that a levy of a farthing per case might be made to provide the necessary fluids. On a million cases this would produce about £IOOO and if subsidised by the Government would make £2OOO available. He urged the growers to give consideration to a comprehensive scheme by which the fruit industry and the present state of its development might derive the fullest possible assistanoe that scientific knowledge and resource could give.
