NINETY-TWO TO-DAY.
MR GEORGE SYME, OF HAWERA. A REMARKABLE PERSONALITY. An event of much interest to" many friends all up and down this coast and in many parts of New Zealand, will be the celebration of his ninety-second birthday to-day by Mr George Syme, of Hawera. Mr Syme has recently keen in wonderfully good health and spirits, and is to be seen on fine days taking his walk up town, keenly observant of the istate of business in the town. Mr Syme is an ardent lover of music and no mean singer, while his gramophone and favourite records go a long way to solace him in his hours of leisure. While he is not able nowadays to take part in that pastime bowls, of which for about 25 years be was a whole-hearted supporter and a good player, lie still takes a keen interest and is always pleased to hear news of the doings of the Hawera Club. He was one of the original members, and I is still patron of the club. Readers will recall the interesting history of his long and active life published in t he “Star” recently, and will recall how closely he was identified with the history of the early times in Wanganui. Patea and Hawera and in earlier days of the goldfields of the South Island.
