CRIMES BY WOMEN.
SEVERAL IN FRANCE, RECENTLY. LENIENT SENTENCE FOR MURDER. PARIS'. March 2d. A woman in Bordeaux who was tu.out to he sold up and evicted decided that life wa® not worth living without hot home. A young trenen woman, Josephine Jamet, lias just been arrested tor a series of theits winch she carried out m a series qi tasiiionable dressmaking eistaiblisnments, where she had been engaged as principal saleswoman. She is described as an expert linguist, nnu her qualifications are said to include a degree at Oxford. Another lenient verdict for a woman who had killed her husband, was given last night- m the case ol the wife oi a notary at Ciermont-h errand. As tins v erdict amounted to only a conviction lor wounding, '.lie sentence could not exceed 18 months’ imprisonment, which in practice will be no more than lo months from the date of arrest. The case was surrounded with melodramatic circumstances, for although the murdered man had a gallant vvai record, lie had many mistresses, some of whom had given or bequeathed money to him, and at the moment oi his death was on the eve ot arrest tor iraudulent bankruptcy. The eloquence of the most flamboyant ox 1 uiis advocates had been enlisted for the defence, and at the last moment beioie the retirement ot the jury, the whitehaired mother of the prisoner staggered across the court, saying: “Gentlemen ot the jury, have pity on my daughter. Site lias .suffered so much.’'
