RACECOURSE MUSIC.

(To: the Editor.) Sir,—Kindly allow me space in your paper to reply to the letter wliieji appeared in last night-’s issue under the Horn de plume of “Not Moaners.” Personally I am always open +-q, receive suggestions which will he of assistance to our band, but in this case I feel that the heavy losses suffered by these unfortunate persons must have somewhat upset their mental capacity. Mr Editor, would you kindly pick out any doleful items from the following programme which the municipal hand played at the trotting meeting: Overtures, “Poet and Peasant,” “Fierrabras” ; fox trots, “Popular Ballads,” “Wimmin,” “Can You Forget,” “Stumbling”; suite, “A Coon’s Day Out,” consisting of the following numbers: March, “Glad-eye-ing”; melody, “Loving”; one step, “Two Stepping” ; humoresque, “The Coster's Courtship” ; triple tongue cornet polka, “Hailstorme” ; three numbers from the “Merchant of Venice,” which includes the “Oriental March,” selection, “Melodious Gems”; selection, “Acis and Galatea,”, which includes several choruses; selection, “The Merrymakers,” consisting of popular songs; musical comedy, “Madame Pompadour” ; fantasia,' “O’er Hill and Dale,” which contains such numbers as the “Dalesmen’s Dance”; “A Song of the Chase” ; “Dance at Evening” ; trombone novelties. “Slim Trombone” and “The Joywheel” ; lour waltzes and four marches. Probably ere this appears in print they will have realised that the date on which their letter was written wag the Ist of April. .Regarding their comment that the band is a very good one; I—to quote a popular saying of Grant Allen—“ Take it from whence it came.” Thanking you Mr Editor for allowing me to use your valuable space to reply to this nonsensical letter.—l am, yours sincere Iv, LIEUT. H. O. A. FOX, Conductor Hawera Municipal Band. P.S.—I would like to mention that scores of persons introduced themselves to me and complimented the band on their good music and playing. ‘ H.C.A.F. Hawera, 3/1/29.
