The Wellington country clubs’ champioiisliip athletic meeting and the Mc- \ illy Shield competition 'were held at McLean Park, Napier, to-day and proved most successful. Despite wintry weather conditions, there was a good attendance. Competitors were present from (jiisborne, Waipawa, Dannevirke, Mangatainoka, Carterton and Palmerston North, besides local men. The contests were keen! many thrilling races and splendid finishes being witnessed. The McVilly Challenge Shield was lost by the holders (Km Toa Club, Palmerston North) to the Hastings Club, whose points totalled 57. Napier were the runners-up with 44, and Dannevirke were third, one behind, and the previous holders were fourth with 38. Then came Carterton 21 Waipawa, Gisborne and Mangatainoka 9. The cup presented by Mrs Annie Holden for the ladies’ relay championship of Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and the Centre was won by Napier after a splendid race with Hastings. Lay attempted to lower the javelin throw record, but failed bv three feet. WHANGAHEI, April 1. There was glorious weather for the holiday, of which the principal attraction was the Maungatapere sports. These were an unprecedented, success. The cup, 150 yards, £3O, was won by E. Brainsby. In the handicap chop of £4O Julian and Reti were equal with C. A. Wallace third, the net time being 41see.
