A vast crowd watched the most spectacular fire in the city since the burning of Kelvin Hall. At the annual conference, at Carlisle, Mr Maxton was elected chairman of the Independent Labour Party. Sir Oswald Mosley failed to secure election to the National Council. Thorew a<s brilliant Eastertide sunshine for eleven hours on Sunday over a wide area, including London, where the temperature was 70deg. in the shade. The Chamber of Deputies, by 331 votes to £3B, has adopted the Bill providing for the re-admission of certain religious orders. M. The French navy prides itself on possessing the. fastest war vessel afloat. The torpedo boat destroyer r'ullepard on its sea trials attained a speed of 38A knots an hour.
