The surplus is due partly to the improvement in business and partly to the death roll of millionaires.

The revenue for 1928-29 shows a surplus of £18,394,463. The surplus compares with the estimate of £14,502,009. The revenue was £858,104,055, the expenditure £682,200,158, and the sinking fund £57,509,434.
