RUGBY FOOTBALL.
K A PONG A SEVEN-A-SIDE. KEEN CONTESTS. A large crowd invaded Kaponga this morning for the annual seven-a-side Rugby tourney on Victoria Park. The main street was lined with a double line of ears for fully three hundred yards and the town presented a very busy aspect. The competing teams number no less than nineteen and include two from Wairarapa, the Masterton team led by the rcdoutable Cooke of All Black fame, and the Carterton team, under IV'. Irvine, also an All Black, and both have so far done well. The organisation under the control of thc energetic honorary secretary (Mr A. Melville) was excellent and no detail was omitted that would make for success. A,s a result the matches were got off with expedition. The ground was in good order and the play fast,and keen. The morning results were as below : FIRST ROUND. Kaponga A 11 v. Elthani A 3. Inglewood A 14 v. Elltham B 0. Waimate A 5 v. Tukapa B 3. Tempsky Road 9 v. Waimate B 0. Star A 5 v Kaponga B 3. Masterton 16 v. Tukapa 5. Celtic 6 v. Eltham C 0. SECOND ROUND. Inglewood A 15 v. Kaponga A 5. Carterton 8 v. Tempsky Road 0. Waimate A v. Celtic; and Masterton v. Star were still to play in this round when this message was sent. N.Z. REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N., March 30. At the annual meeting of the. New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association 1 held this morning, Mr D. McKenzie (Wellington) intimated that he was not seeking* re-election as president, an office which he had held since 1913. Mr Ivronfield, Auckland, moved that the referee should place the ball in the 1 scrummage on all occasions. An amendment wa.s also moved that the words “where possible” be added. Both amendment and motion were rejected. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr Peter Maekie (Auckland) ; vice-presidents, one from, each association; committee, Messrs A. M. Sims (South Canterbury). C. White (Manawatu). D. McKenzie., G. Broadlev. T. A. Fletcher. L. Servers, E. S. Hylton (Wellington); auditor, Mr S. W. Crowthers. It was decided to appoint a salaried secretary. The headquarters will remain at Wellington. The next conference will be held at Christchurch.
