I promise to smile every time I can, and to chase all the frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness. y This week finds us in the middle of Easter, a holiday period which we all look forward to with pleasure I know that at this season of the year the thoughts of mj Smile, will he turning to such things as Easter eggs and liot-mos. buns, in addition to holidays from school and visits to and from friends. Now I suppose we all know the true significance of Easter —that it is a festival to celebrate the anniversary of the resurrection of the Lord aftei Calvaiy i know many little boys and girls-and some grown-ups, too—who are not clear in their minds regarding the connection between Easter and the eating of _ confectionery “eggs” and hot-cross buns. Well, the historians and othei wise men who know all about ancient things, tell us that Ion" long ago, even before the birth of Christ, the people used to hold great festivals to welcome the “go spring, the forerunner of the productive season of the yeai. The occasion was celebrated by feasting and merrimei t, the lighting of bonfires and the eating of delicacies and so on. Later this celebration was revived to mark the anniversary of another resurrection, not the ‘ resurrection o the summer, but the return of the Lord. All over the Christian world Easter is observed among the people by some departure from the work and fare of everyday me, and in the pretty little Easter eggs and chickens we see carried on a custom which has been handed down to ns through the ages.
