MOTOR INSURANCE.

COMPULSORY AFTER MAY. POSITION EXPLAINED. As most motorists know, it will bo compulsory .when re-lieeusing tlieir vehicles by May 31 next to insure them. This will not, however, be an additional burden on those who hold comprehensive policies, insurance companies having agreed to make a compensating refund when policies now in existence are being renewed. Passenger vehicles are the only instance in which the refund will be lower than the amount paid for the compulsory cover. The third party insurance cover fees are: Motor-cycle's, 15s; private cars, £1; goods vehicles, £1 10s; goods vehicles convertible for passenger use, £?•; taxis, service ears, and buses up to six seats, £7 10s; each additional seat up to 11, £1 10s; each scat between 11 and 25, £1; each seat in excess of 25, 10s. In all cases it will be necessary for a motorist to pay £1 when procuring new number plates. When taking out a policy a motorist must, mention the company ho favours, and the amount concerned, from which a small sum is deducted by the Postal Department for its expenses in connection with business is paid to the company mentioned. Xo matter who the driver is the money cannot be refused and the vehicle is considered as being insured as from June 1. It is stated that the companies are not greatly pleased with the compulsory system and that the only remedy in the case of bad drivers is for the company to apply to a magistrate for his license to be cancelled. The personal accident cover will be eliminated from comprehensive policies issued, the fee being about £1 less. A refund will be granted in respect of the unexpired period at the time of compulsory insurance when comprehensive policies now in existence arc being renewed. in effect the legislation provides compensation for pedestrians and others for personal injury only, against those negligent and irresponsible motorists who have nothing to lose, and who take no steps to provide for the consequences of their negligent acts.
