Twelve thousand were present at the Stadium when the American bantaairweigh.t Fidel La Barba (8.9) knocked out the South African Wil le Smith (8.10) in the 12th round. La, Barba administered unmerciful punishment to the face and body, using mostly a, left hook with a right rip to the body, but a large section wanted Smith to win. There was a laughable incident at the end of the contest, when a, spectator entered the ring to commiserate with Smith and refused to leave.
