Yesterday iv;ts a red-letter day for the school children, the- occasion of the Hawera and district- combined schools picnic at- Ngamutu Beach. A record crowd left Hawera. in two special trains, there hieing 902 children, 593 adults-, and 133 students and tutors, a. total of 1(528 persons who actually paid fares. The Bailway Department received in fares something over £2OO. In addition there were hundreds of motor-cars which conveyed pioneers •from all parts of the province'.
