WAIKATO RIVER.
DANGER FROM SILTING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAMILTON, March 2. A conference has been called in Hamilton next Tuesday to consider the silting of the Waikato River and the consequent frequent floodings of the low-lying areas. The trouble becomes worse every year.
Captain O. Roose, head of' a shipping i company with several vessels navigating the Waikato, told the “Waikato •Times” that the authorities were throwing money away in spending thousands in raising the road at Mercer above flood level. The floods would rise still higher uless silting were prevented. The railway line would also have to be raised. In the meantime many thousands of acres of farm lands have been ruined by long periods of i flooding. Captain Roose advocated dredging the lower reaches of the river, also building- groins to assist scouring by the current. The silting had greatly increased since the Arapuni electric dam had -been built and the river diverted.
