RJVERTUNA PLAY KAPONGA AT TENNIS.
Rivertuna played, on Saturday, its first match of the second round of the Eigmont Minor Tennis Competition, when it met Kaponga, the latter winning iby a consider able margin which, nevertheless, was very much less thau in the match of the first round when Kaponga won by 11 sets to 3, the score last Saturday being 16 sets to 8, the games throughout also being far more closely contested. Though hot, the weather was ideal for tennis, some excellent. games being witnessed on courts which were in top-tip order. The singles between W. Boyd and R. McCarthy presented a struggle which was in doubt right to the very end after 5 all and deuce had been reached. McCarthy won the last two points and the set by G to 5. Apart, altogether from the winning or losing of these matches, “competition” afternoons are very popular, for not only do players have the opportunity of meeting a variety of opponents and playing on other courts, but the social side of these gatherings is a large factor, in their enjoyment. TENNIS CLUB’S RECORD BALL. Whether due to the fine night, extensive advertising or to the ball being one of the first for some time, the Awatuna Hall was packed last Friday as it has probably never been packed, before. Some idea of the crowd could be obtained by the line of cars, buses and motor-cycles parked for yards and yards by the roadside leading to the hall. Those in charge of the_door had a busy time, no. less than 235 passing into the dance where seating and even standing accommodation were soon overtaxed. The outstanding features of the evening were music supplied By Coburn’s Star orchestra, the skilful management by M’s.C., Messrs. F. Palmer and A. Castles, and the “sporting crowd which accepted the various 1 inconveniences due to lack of space, with never-failing good humour. The.novelty dances, including the carnival, Monte Carlo, and streamer, were keenly competed; for, whilst there was a steady surge towards the comer where icecreams and soft drinks were being handed out as fast as possible ; unfortunately supplies were soon sold out. Special credit is due to the younger members of the club who were responsible for the supper arrangements, the five feeing [handled with great capability, the only “fly in the ointment” being due to the running out of supplies. Som& of the last sitting had to; be satisfied with a. somewhat meagre supper but took it with a good graoe when they realised the unusual proportions of the audience. The;han and supper room looked most attactive under a canopy of flags end flowers the colour effect 'being itensified by tae brilliant streamers, paper eaus ,an confetti-strewn dancers. The nances will be appreciably strengthened by tlie success winch constitutes a record, it is stated.
