OFFICIAL HERD TEST.
TARANAKI HERD’S OUTSTANDING RECORD. A striking instance of the value of the Official Herd Test is afforded by the experience of Messrs Clemow Bros., of the “Penrose” Jersey Stud, Stratford. These enterprising breeders put
the whole of their lierd of 58 cows under Official Herd • Test last season, and despite the fact that a severe drought prevailed for a considerable period,, the results were very gratifying. Indeed the average return of 3661 b butter-fat per cow for. the whole herd of 58 cows constitutes a New Zealand record for herds of over 50 cows under Official Herd Test. What is more, 27 out of the 58 cows were heifers, and the average period of the test was under ten months, and had they been carried through for 365 days they would have all qualified. The handsome average production of 3661 b fat in under 10 months is a tribute to Messrs Clemow Bros.’ former herd sire, Hose’s Attraction’s Fox, all except ten of the herd being descendants of this successful butter-fat sire. While at Penrose, Hose’s Attraction’s Fox, who has now 13 c.o.r. daughters, qualified as a champion but-ter-fat bull, with five heifers averaging 570.541 b fat, with an average test of 6.13 per cent. The herd of 58 cows is made up of daughters of the following bulls: Rose’s Attraction’s Fox C. 8.8., Primroes Glory Lad, Penrose Sultan, and Penrose Noble.
As a companion herd sire to Penrose Noble, Messrs Clemow Bros, have a promising bull, bred by Mr. It. L. Hoi-n, iii ICu Ku Bonny Owler, who is by the champion butter-fat- bull Owler of Puketapu from Ku Ku Bonny Jean, a daughter of the champion bull Jersey Meadows Birch and Ku Ku Glory (c.o.r. 6331 b fat as a senior-two-year-old), who is by Owler of Puketapu.
