The dispute over Judge Lukin’s award providing a forty-eight hour working week instead of a torty-four came to a head in Victoria, this morning when, members of the union in the three biggest timber yards in the metropolitan area failed to respond to 7.30 whistles to start work, after which they found the doors locked against jtkem. ■ , The yards affected are Jonn Sharp and -Sons, Ltd., Proprietary, Ltd., and Millar’s Timber and Trading Company, Ltd., ail-1 in South Melbourne. Making an effort to avert extension of the dispute, the Attorney-General, •the Hon. J. G., Latham, and Senator Ogden, of the Department of Industry, are going to Melbourne to-niglit. Preparations were made yesterday by the Sydney timber yard and sawmilling and allied industries! for a strike &s from to-morroiw. It is expected that, if the men refuse to conform to the decision of the Arbitration Court and cease work rather than accept a 48-hou.r week, the majority of the timber yards and. sawmills throughout will he idle within a few days.
