CHANNEL TUNNEL SCHEME.
FRANCE READY. WILLING TO NEGOTIATE. (United Pres*. Asaociation—rßy Electric Telegrapn Copyright.) —United Service). LONDON, Jan. 24. The French Ambassador, M. De Fleuriau, speaking at Sir \V. Bull’s dinner, said “I am authorised to say the French Government is ready, when the British Government is ready, to take up the tunnel and make the necessary arrangements. It cannot at present do more.” Baron D’Erlanger, chairman of the 'funnel Company, estimated that passengers within ten years would reach four millions yearly and a fai’e of 13s would yield a gross income of £3,400,000. Freights on good traffic would probably bring in another £BOO,OOO, and working expenses would be about £1,000,000. M. Painleve has issued a statement that personally he regards the Channel tunnel as a great and entirely feasible work in nowise detrimental to national defence. The Minister of Public Works sees no reason why the' undertaking should not be carried out as soon as arrangements can be made with the French Submarine Railway Company. This subsidiary northern railway still holds a charter for the construction of the tunnel, all earlier provisions and subsidies for the work having expired.
