The volunteers scrambled for the gangway, which broke, fifteen', falling oai the wharf. They aaad others climbed the ropes, crossed over the Mareeba and jumped into ketches on the other side ' "
Stones were thrown at them, one volunteer replying by firing four shots from a revolver. ; .
A hundred and fifty mounted police swooped down on the rioters, who then began to move towards the steamer Mamnipa, where volunteers were again attacked with stones and hoots.
The police used their batons freely and scattered the men in all direc r tions, many having to go to hospital. One volunteer, however, was badly injured, being brutally kicked -while on the ground.
