'By Tfslegraph—Press Association.) ‘ DUNEDIN, Jan. 14. - William Stanley Deal, aged 20, residing. at Maori Hill, succumbed to injuries received while working under a motor-car at Maori Hill. Deceased was lying under the car removing nuts when his parents heard him call for assistance and found him pinned beneath the petrol tank. They freed him, he stood up, walked into the house, lay on ins bed and expired. NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING. ROTORUA, Jan. 14. A narrow escape from drowning occurred at Lake Rotorua. While bathing from a boat' off the shore _ at Koutu, Miss MacDonald, a chemist’s assistant, and a man named Wells, a taxi driver, found that the boat had drifted away. Wells became exhausted, and Miss MacDonald, a powerful swimmer, supported him for a long time. A party, seeing the empty boat, made for the spot, hut no sign was seen of the occupants. At last cries directed them, and Wells in a semi-conscious state was taken into the rescuers’ boat. After medical aid they were both able to proceed home. <» ELDERLY MAN FOUND HANGING DUNEDIN, Jan. 14. Thomas Charles Goyen, aged 74, committed suicide by hanging last night. Deceased had been in bad health for some years, and became very despondent at times.

A SUDDEN DEATH. CARTERTON, Joan 14. The sudden death occurred in the lower valley last night of Sinclair Thomas Thompson, a farmer aged 40. Mrs Thompson was wakened about 1.39 ,by the baby crying. She attended to the infant and when she returned to bed she found (that her husband was dead. Deceased had been married for three years and leaves a widow and one child. LEFT HAND BLOWN OFF. WHANGAREI, Jan. 14. A distressing accident occurred at Whamgarci on Saturday which resulted in serious injuries being received by Thos. Hollows, aged 20, whilst engaged in snipe shooting in an open boat. It appears that Hollows' picked up a double-barrelled gun from the bottom of the boat to have a shot at snipe, but the fire arm came in contact with a thwart and exploded, resulting in Hollows having his left hand blown off and the forearm filled with shot. The: injured man was placed aboard the launch Eva, a tourniquet was applied, and lie was brought to the district hospital, where he received surgical attention.
