The Rev. J. W. S. Tomlin succeeds Bishop Knight as Avarden of Saint Augustine’s Missionary College, Canterbury, states a London cable. Mr. M. W. Bridger and family returned to Eltham last night, after spending a fortnight camping at Urenui beach.
Mr. L. Egarr, clerk of the court, and Constable Townsend, of Eltham, and their families, have left tor a motor tour in the Auckland district. They will be aAvay for three weeks.
Constable O ’Donohue , of Kaponga, is at present relieving Constable Townsend at Eltham.
Mr. J. L. Weir, of Eltham, who has passed through a very serious illness, is making rapid progress towards reeoA'ery.
Mr and Airs .'Sunderland and Mr Smyth, of Masterton, Avho are spending a feAv days in HaAvera, are guests at the Central -Hotel.
The Bank of New South Wales directorate yesterday appointed Mr. A. C. Davidson general manager in succession to Air. Oscar Lines, who has retired, states a, Sydney cable. At a meeting of the executiA'e of the New Plymouth Jersey Cattle Club, held yesterday, it was decided to hold a sale of female cattle on Tuesday, May 28.
Sir Ha,rry Lauder, who has 'been the guest of Mr Donald MacDonald at Kdendalc, So'ufehianr, will proioeed to the fishing grounds at RusseM, Bay of Islands, with his host. Bishop Bennett, off Aotearoa, is now on the first stage of his tour of his diocese, which covers the whole of New Zealand. On Monday; he left Hastings, preaching at Opoutiuma on Tuesday. Hater ho will continue up the East Coast through the Bay of Plenty to Rotorua and Taupo, and thence to Taranaki and Wanganui, afterwards, viistmg the South Island.
On the eve of his departure from Stratford, Mr. A. E. Rowell, a popular member of the Stratford Bowling Club, was farewelled at a social last night, when there were present members of other clubs in South Taranaki. He was presented by his clubmates with a case, of pipes, by Messrs. Kendall and Goodwin, of the Park Club, with writing materials and a mascot', accompanied by the heartiest good wishes of bowiers in the district.
Mr J. N. Stephenson, who has tendered" his resignation to the Opunake Harbour Board to take up the secretaryship of tlie Opunake Power Board, was voted a bonus of £lO 10s by the \Harbour Board at its last meeting, and several eulogistic references were made by members to the good work done by Mr. Stephenson during his tenure as ( secretary. Mr. A. G. Hardy, of New 'Plymouth, lias teen appointed to the combined positions of secretary, harbourmaster and wharfinger.
Mr. G. T. Cubbon, ex-Chief of Police in the city of Wichita, Kansas, U.&.A., arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi. He will visit relatives and see the sights in the North and .South islands ior two weeks, and will then go on to Australia and" Europe. Mr. Cubbon was Chief of Police for eight years, and for two years was on the Wichita City Council. Wichita is larger than Wellington, and is a typical midWestern city. Mr. F. D. Trapp, from Brooklyn, New York, who is on his second trip round the world, arrived at Auckland bv the Aorangi. Mr. Trapp is connected with General Motors, Ltd., and hopes to get an insight into the motor business in New Zealand, it is his second visit to this country, and it is his intention to study New Zealand’s scenic attractions as much as possible. Mr. Trapp will go on to Australia, and will be away from the United States for several years.
