NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAY RESUMED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Dee. 29. The New Zealand tennis championships were resumed about 10.30 this morning in dull, muggy weather. The courts were very heavy as the result of yesterday’s- downpour. Results are: MEN’S SINGLES.
Second round. —P. H. Jone,s (Maori) beat Carter (Auckland), 6 —o, 6 —o, 6—o; Sturt (Auckland) beat Morrison (Auckland), 6—2, 7 —5, 6—2; Enthwistle (Auckland) beat Melody (Wellington), 6—l, 2—6, 6—2, 6—3; A. L. France (Wellington) beat Macintosh (Auckland), 6—3, 6—2, 6—3 ; Watson (Otago) beat How© (Wellington), 6—o, 6—l, 6 —l. Gregory (Auckland)' won from Wright (Waikato) by default; Laurenson (Wakiato) beat Piekmere (Wliangarei), 16—2, 6—o, G- —0; Larape (Wanganui) beat Taylor (Auckland), C—l, 6 —o, '6—l; Martin (Auckland) beat Johns (Auckland) 6—4, the latter retiring with a sprained ankle. MEN’S DOUBLE'S. First round. —-Watkins and ’ Lucas (Auckland) beat Thorne (Whangarei) and Ferkins (Wellington), G—-3, 6—3, BOYS’ SINGLES. Fislier (Auckland) beat Howe (Wellington),. 5—6, 6 —2, 7 —5. Heavy rollers were necessary to prepare the- courts, and sawdust was freely sprinkled on the baseline, which were very greasy. COURTS IN GOOD ORDER.
The Hawera. Tennis Club continued the competitions this afternoon. The light breeze and the sun have dried up the courts -since- yesterday’s rain, and at the commencement of play,- they were in excellent condition.
Although -several contestants have returned to their various homes, all the events are still in an interesting stage and exciting contests are anticipated in the finals, which will be reached by Monday afternoon. The following are the details of matches played up to the time of going to press : MEN’S- HANDICAP SINGLES—A GRADE!. 70 Points Advantage.
Second Round.—Picard (35) defeated Clemanoe (22) 70 —55; Berg (3) defeated J- McCarthy (17) 70—65.
