EAT LETTUCE—AND BE SLIM

THE NEWEST DIET. The other day I met. a charming Russian, says a London writer. We talked of lots of things; arid Russians, you know,, always talk well. Then we approached the topic. I was quite prepared for it, beoauso it is a subject you can never get away from these days, and you have only to exclaim; “I know a marvellous diet!’ to draw quite a little circle of people round you at any party. My friend said, in a voice vibrating with emotion, “Eat lettuce.’) I was relieved, because it might have been so much worse. A little while ago it was raw spinach, which isn’t a bit exciting, and we are all growing dreadfully tired of carrots. Well, now it is lettuce. “Absolutely marvellous, my dear.” If you want to get slim quickly, like my friend—and she _ weighed 11' stone before somebody said “lettuce” to her, and she now has the prettiest figure —you must eat lettuce for lunch and dinner, and neither breakfast nor tea in between. , And you must have five pints of water a day. But if yon are content to lose weight gradually, it is quite sufficient to have a lettuce lunch, and anything you like for dinner. It took my friend six weeks to get her present very pretty figure. Of course, you must eat tlie lettuce as it is, with no dressing, and on alternate days you may add a few rusks and some raw tomatoes. Wash down this feast with water.
