TWO MATCHES BEING PLAYED j AUCKLAND V. CANTERBURY. VISITORS DOING WELL. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 26. The weather was iiot and sultry for the opening of the Plunket Shield match, Auckland v. Canterbury, yesterday. Auckland won the toss and batted on a wicket which played true and fast. The outfield was in perfect order. Drizzling rain began to fall about three o’clocK, at first very light, but increasing until at 4,30 it was raining heavily. Bowley and Mills opened the Auckland innings against the bowling ol I Read and Cunningham. The batsmen played confidently', but runs came chiefly in singles until at 15 Read clean bowled Mills. 1,5—1—7. Joined by Postles, the Auckland coach scored more 'freely, with good placements through the field. He had a life just after he reached double figures, when Hamilton just got his hand on a high ball through the slips and collided with Page in liis second grab at the ball. Bowley' went on to bat attractively until reaching 40, when he was bowled off his pads hy Newman. Postles, partnered by Weir, batted steadily, but with the score at 71 he fell a victim to a full toss from Merritt. Alloott, who followed, was particularly severe oil Merritt, hitting him for several fours and soon running into the thirties. The. Auckland captain, Allcott, was missed in the slips by Hamilton off Cunningham with his total at 33. One hundred went up after i b minutes’ play, and the pair were still together. At the tea adjournment the score was 140 for three wickets (Allcott not out 47, Weir not out 13). Allcott reached 50 in as many minutes. At 160 Newman clean-bowled Weir The batsman stood up to leave an off ball alone, but the ball turned in well and broke his wicket. 1594 — 27. Gillespie followed. At five o’clock light rain was falhng. The score was 173. To-day Auckland were all out for 330 ruins. OTAGO V. WELLINGTON. SOUTHERNERS SCORE 398. WELLINGTON, Dec. 26. Otago commenced its match against Wellington, the holders of the .Pliinket Shield, yesterday morning. Play continued yesterday afternoon with Otago at the crease and when, stumps were drawn. Wellington's innings had just commenced, Otago having made 398. The top scorer was A. W. Alloo, the captain, who went in at a critical stage of the game and whose wicket was the last to fall when he had made 101. L. C. Eastman the Essex x>rofessional, pleased the crowd with his forceful methods, and made 88. Blunt made 39 runs in stylish manner Henderson took four wickets for 127 and Lambert three /for 67. They were the best of the numerous bowlers tried. Scoring to-day was very slow, but- at 5 p.m. half the Wellington side was out- for 189. OTAGO. First Innings.
