ELTHAM BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. His Worship the Mayor (Mr I. J. Bridger) presided over the monthly meeting of the Eiltham Borough Council, held last evening. The treasurer reported financial matters as follows: Receipts for November totalled £4OOB 4s Od, the principal contributing sources of revenue being rates £3372 13s lid, gasworks £291 14s, Town Ha.l l l £245 11s 3d, workers’ dwdllings £SO 3s na. . Expenditure for the same period was £772 lla 6d, allocated to the following accounts: —wJemerail £231 Is 6d, water supply £22 Bs, gasworks £257 6s 6d, Town Hall £l7l 9s lid, main highways £52 11s, heavy traffic refunds £ll 13s 4d, Domain £26 Is 3d. Credit bank balances at November 30 were:—District fund account, £2749 16s 9d ; Domain account, £22 19s 7d; cemetery account, £65 8s 3d; sewerage, loan account, £37 Is 7d, (fixed deposit) £IOO0 —a total credit of £3875 Os 2d. Accounts amounting to £787 9s 4d j were, passed for payment. i A comparative statement of gasworks receipts and expenditure for the period ended April 1 to November 30 in the yeans 1926. 1927 and 192 b showed: —- Receipts. 1926, £2702 12s 7d; 1927, £257S 12s; 1928, £236S 15s sd. In the respective years gas sales l were £2023 0s 6d, £1953 3s 6d ancl £1740 13s 7d. Expenditure—l 926, £2097 3s sd: 1927, £2076 13s 7d; 1928, £1748 8s 2d. During the month of November gas sold per meter wa® 362,700 feet, as against 396.100 feet in the corresponding period 1 of 1927. Salles of fittings, coke, and tar returned £7l 14s Bd. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS. Heads of various departments reported on the month’s activities as follows: Overseer. Roads. —Grubbing up the sides and grouting in metal with tar to a width of two feet on each .side was completed on Conway Road from High Street to Castle Street. Moir Street from High Street to Mill Street was scarified, re-graded unci tar-grouted. Meuli Street was scarified, graded, clay blinded and sanded. Collingwood Street from Bridge Street to the Clifford Road was scarified and widened out to eliminate the high camber, ancl tar-grouted. Patching with, tarred metal was don© on the No. 2 highway. The grass on the road sides is being cut and' removed.

Footpaths.—London Street from York Street to High Street was graded with clay and sanded. Chips were spread on Cornwall Street in readiness for tarring. Forming the kerb and water channel is being attended to on Preston Street and Hill Street. _ Path cleaning was carried out on portions of the following streets:' High Street, Bridge Street, London Street, King Edward Street, Moir Street, Hill Street, Preston Street, Clifford Road and Collingwood Street. INSPECTOR, A house-to-house inspection of parts of the borough showed that the general clean-up day improved sanitary conditions—there was practically no rubbish lying about backyards. Several notices to remove hedge trimmings from road sides have keen served. Legal action will be taken without further notice if this breach continues.

Two head or stock were impounded, the fees amounting to 7s.

SANITARY INSPECTOR

Mr R, Gooding reported on routine inspections and suggested that the sewering of premises in Eltham Road might be further pursued. House-to-house inspections in co-operation with the borough inspector were curried out. There were no notifications of infectious diseases during the month. RESERVES CARETAKER,

Mr P. J. Wilrock stated that at Tallin ata Park everything was in readiness for the convenience of campers. During the month a gas stove and rings were installed in the pavilion annex. ABATTOIR MANAGER,

Stock slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs comprised 84 cows, seven heifers-, one calf, 203 sheep, 24 lambs, 51 pigs. Three cows and two pigs were condemned. RECOMMENDATIONS OF COMMITTEES.

While regretfully recording the resignation of Mr C. J. Bagby (gasworks manager), the Finance Committee recommended that liis successor he allowed a maximum quantity of 500 feet of gas monthly, free of charge and .that repairs and renovations required at'the gasworks manager’s residence be authorised. The committee also recommended the following grants: Eltham Highland Pipe Band, £10; maintenance of school baths. £10; Egmont National Park Board, £ls ; and that the salaries qf the office assistants he increased by 5s per week in each case.

A suggestion was made by the Town Hall and pictures committee that picture programmes should commence at 8.1,5 p.m. as from December IS. The Works Committee’s recommendations were as follows : That the council undertaxe tiro worx of bitumensurfacing of tlie Power Board’s King Edward Street frontage, yard and right-of-way to Bridge Street as early as possible, as .requested by the hoard. That the scarifying, regrading, remetalling and tar-sealing portion ot

Collingwood Street, between Stanners and Bridget* Streets, be authorised. The reserves and cemetery committee suggested that the question of provision of dressing sheds at Taumata Park for convenience of bathers, be referred to the chairman. The foretgoing reports and recommendations were adopted.
