COST TO BRITAIN.

SUBSIDY TO rUNDC. MORE GOVERNMENT MEASURES. (British Ollielal Wireless.) Received 1.10 p.m. to-dav. RUGBY, Dec. 17. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Stanley Baldwin, stated in the House or Commons to-day that the Government i.s not opposed to asking Parliament to authorise certain measures to deal with tiic present emergency in the distressed mining areas. Jt was very important that tne.se measures (should he considered in addition to the policy which the GoyerinnenL had already initiated and Avliich it was resolved to pursue, apart altogether from the heavy cost of the normal social services-, including linemptoyment insui ancle, school medical services, and maternity and child welfare and in addition t 0 the proposals for the rebel of the industry from local taxation. The special provisions made by Parliament for. the assistance of unemployed generally during the current financial year amounted to .-£‘1,700.000, over arid above Budget estimates. The special measures which the Government would now ask Parliament were an authority to grant to the Lord Mayor’s fund £1 for every £1 received in voluntary subscription, and to make an immediate grant of £150,000 to the fund as, an equivalent of the money already subscribed to the fund.-’

TRANSFER OF UNEMPLOYED. Received 1.15 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Dec-. 17. Mr Baldwin said tiial the transfer of unemployed from the distressed areas was proceeding steadily,, but was .hindered because the married men found it difficult to leave their homes unless special assistance were available for their removal and resettlement of the families. He would, therefore, ask Parliament to vote £IOO,OOO immediately for the removal of families.
