NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(BY ‘'MAECENAS”) No race meetings will be held in the Dominion before Boxing Day. The brief spell will whet the appetite ior the holiday meetings. Considering the large number of meetings field at the same time, the acceptances for the Taranaki Jockey Club meeting must. o& considered satisfactory. Desert Glow, who won the AVuipa Cup under 7.13 last Saturday, is engaged in the coining Auckland Cup. This gelding has the light impost of 7.0, but even with that luxurious weight, and the fact that he is well, lie is not likely to oomo into increased favour for the big two-mile race. In winning the big sprint handicap at the AVaipa meeting under the big weight of 10.6 that brilliant gelding Aussie demonstrated that he is now as well as ever lie was. This means that Aussie will have to be seriously considered for the Railway Handicap at Ellerstie, despite his 9.9. The acceptance for the Auckland Cup received on Friday last revealed a great weakening of the field, such fine performers as Star Stranger, Rapier, Footfall, Te Kara, Piutliair, Beacon Light, First Sight and many others failing to survive the payment, and as the field now appears it cannot he classed as a strong one. The big grey gelding Eli Timi appears as an acceptor for the Auckland. Cup. As, on recent form, Eli Timi could not win a hack cup, it would appear that liis presence in the twomile handicap of the Auckland Racing Club can only be due to the intention of helping along the funds of the nor-, them club. For tire racing year ended July 31, 1928, the amount extracted from fob. lowers of racing in the form of taxation amounted to the huge sum of £564,032. Is it any wonder that the totalisator figures are showing a big. decline, and can one agree that, racing, folk should be saddled with such a huge penalty for the right of following their favourite pastime. Supremacy is to be ridden in the Great Northern Foal Stakes by K. Reed. If the northerner lias made age improvement since winning the Avondale and Welcome Stakes, the big classic for two-year-olds to be decided at Ellerslie on Boxing Day may not be the certainty for Honour generally agreed on. Since lie won the AYeloome Stakes at Riccarton last November, Honour lias got through a great amount of work, and at present is a very fit youngster. That Honour is good there is no doubt, and. if lie is to be beaten in the Great Northern Foal Stakes it will take a finst-class two-year-old to accomplish the task. Supremacy lias done all that was possible by winning in each of two staffs, and is a brilliant galloper, but whether the equal of Honour remains to be seen. Limerick is again in work at Riccarton, and last week went a. fast lialfmile and pulled up well. Some think there will be a difficulty in winding up the great sou of Liniond, but trainer F. Jones does not appear bo have any doubt on. the matter, and says that Limerick will be raced in the Hazlett Memorial at the Dunedin meeting next February.
