TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1928. DAYLIGHT SAVING.

Recent advices from Wellington, indicate that an endeavour is to be made at the next session of Parliament tointroduce a Bill for the advancement of the clock by a full hour in summer. There is no : doubt that a movement in such a direction, would be very popular in many quarters, and it is not so certain that it would bo so strenuously opposed in others as it was formerly. However, in view of the surprise which was created in this and other farming districts by the manner of the introduction of the half-hour of daylight saving at present in operation, those who do not favour the extension of .the time would be well advised to keep themselves informed as to the progress of the move now on foot to secure the support of the new Parliament. for any Bill which may be brought forward next year. There has been a careful counting of heads by those who. advocate the re-enactment rtf the original legislation., and it has been estimated that, there is a very fair chance of securing the support of a majority of members of the new Parliament. The utterances of the successful candidates have been checked up by daylight saving enthusiasts and it has been declared that there are .‘l2 members definitely committed to support any legislation which has for its object ihe ronitroduction of the full hour. There ore several members who are

known .to bo opposed) to the proposed change, but there are also as many, if not more, who axe considered “doubtful. 55 Tho daylight-savers, therefore, claim that they have to secure the allegiance of only some nine or ten < ‘ doubtful 5 5 members to ensure the passage of .the Bill. In view of the acceptance by the country of the half-hour of daylight, saving this year, there would appear to be good reason for the optimism. with which the daylight-savers express themselves as regards tho outcome of • the movement to secure the ■full hour next summer.
