If or some nron cos pa<s>t* tne girls at Lire riaxCua rx.gji tocnooi nave ucen reneiansuig a -senes or country uaiiues, oa-sea oil r.ngiisn font songs, these are aw taught in the «*hooiis of Jitn.gia.ud, and are certainty very attractive, tney form, excellent training tor g/tiirs aiwt loiter a jove of dancing, develop the sense ot rnyttim and are generally ot educative value. Yesterday at the- primary schools’ sprnbs gathering a hundred and twenty grid's gave a most attractive demonstration, which would have done credit to suer a gathering in any ot the cities ot teh Dominion. in a double line, and headed by the school band, under Mr H. C. A. Fox, they marched to the -Showground, -taking up their position in the centre of the oval in a hollow square formed by boys of the school. The girls then went through a nlumber of evolutions, making the four country folk -dances. They ishowed-in ab'-i their work admirable precision and case, concluding the evolutions with a series of “circvc-s” from which, they had to “unwind” themselves. These movements were typical in -every way of the “figure” dance, which depends for its expressiveness upon the weaving of patterned eon canted evolutions rather than upon intricate steps _or S’i'nhornto body movements. ’ 1 imiiig and phrasing and concerted action are essential in all these dances. To the excellent music of the band they executed the figures of the dances, showing throughout a nice .sense ot rlivthm and time. There was evident throughout the ga v -simplicity which marks the- folk dance-. • The girls gained, as they deserved-, hearty corn.miendation from the crowd prose n t.
