BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

<? CALF-REARING CONTESTS. GROUP, JUDGING RESULTS. The semi-final stage of judging in the South Taranaki Roys’ and Girls’ Clubs calf-rearing contests was commenced yesterday, when the placed animals in Groups I and 11, judged last month, were presented at Cardiff and Toko respectively to determine representation in the championship contest at Taumata Park, Eltham, on December 14, at 11.45 a.m. The judges at Cardiff were Messrs H. J. Merchant, Cardiff (dairy type), W. P Jenkins, Eltham (condition), and Rod Syme, agricultural instructor under the 'Taranaki Education Board (chart). At Toko the same, judges officiated, with the addition of Mr. CWalsh, Stratford, who combined with Mr. Jenkins in adjudicating on rearing results. In a general revuew of the calves presented Mr. Jenkins said their condition was excellent throughout each group, especially so as regards the. Jerseys. At Cardiff he emphasised the improvement effected in most of the calves since he had judged them on November 19, particularly in reference to Edith Mander’s “Lady,” indicating clearly that the children had absorbed and acted upon the advice he then gave as to the care of the calves. At each place visited the judges addressed the children on the points _to be aimed at throughout the transition stage from a healthy calf to the ideal, profitable dairy cow. During the visit to Cardiff the judges, Press representatives, and visitors were entertained at morning tea, which was served by the elder school children in the Cardiff hall and was much appreciated. A CARDIFF; PRODUCT.
